Keyboarding
What is Keyboarding all About?
Computer Keyboarding has three components: (1) Touch-Typing Method, (2) Formatting Business Documents, and (3) Internet Skills and Safety.
Touch-Typing Method The main focus of this course is to develop students' typing skills. My goal is that students will be able to type on the computer accurately and quickly using touch-typing method. This consists of resting one's fingers on the homerow of the keyboard, while extending fingers one-by-one to the desired key(s). A student's typing form, accuracy, and posture are the only skills evaluated for a grade. Although typing speed is important, it is not evaluated for a grade. It is my belief that typing speed (WPM/GWAM) will increase overtime with solid practice. Too often when speed is the focus of an exercise, students' form is lacking and therefore defeats the purpose of the exercise. Formatting Business Documents Once the touch-typing method has been developed, students will learn how to format various business documents. These include: Standard Memo, Personal-Business Letter, Business Letter, MLA Report, and a Table using tab stops. Students will practice formatting these documents through a variety of in-class exercises. On the final exam, students must correctly format each of these business documents. Internet Skills and Safety Throughout the course, students will learn a variety of skills to effectively use and search the internet. Students will then apply these searching skills in Internet Search Activities. Online safety will also be discussed in this course. Such topics include: sharing personal information, social networking, email, and downloading web content. |
Course Website
We will use the website, Haiku, throughout this course. This site will allow students to see their daily assignments, submit their work, and collaborate with classmates and myself on course content.
Please note that Infinite Campus/Parent Portal is still the official source a student’s grade and missing work, but Haiku will serve as a classroom tool for viewing, completing, and submitting classwork.
Parents/Guardians: You can also keep up with our class through Haiku. Please contact me at [email protected] for information on how to gain access to our course and be linked to your student's account.
